Álvaro Siza Vieira is a famous architect from Portugal.

An architect is a person who designs buildings and spaces. People often describe his work as "poetic modernism." This means his buildings focus on simplicity and balance.

His style is also called minimalist. This style uses very few extra decorations. He wants the shape and feeling of the building to shine. His work makes people stop and wonder about the space.

Siza creates buildings by looking closely at the land.

For example, he built the Piscinas de Marés in the 1960s. This is a pool complex in a fishing town called Leça da Palmeira. He set the pools directly into the natural rock. One pool is for children and one is for adults. He also included a building for changing rooms and a cafe. The pools have wide views of the sea. This shows how he works with nature instead of against it.

Siza was born on June 25, 1933, in Matosinhos.

He studied at the University of Porto. He graduated in 1955 from the school now called FAUP. Even before he finished school, he built four houses. In 1954, he opened his own private practice in Porto. He also worked as a teacher for many years. He taught at FAUP and at Harvard University in the United States.

His career includes many important projects across the globe.

In 1977, he helped plan low-cost housing in Évora. He was part of a team that rebuilt the Chiado district in Lisbon. This area was destroyed by a fire in 1988. He also designed a building in China that won an award in 2015. In 2019, he started a tall apartment building in Manhattan, New York. He has even designed buildings for a golf club in Taiwan.

Because he is so skilled, Siza has won many great prizes.

He won the Pritzker Prize in 1992. He also won the Golden Lion for his life of work in 2012. Siza wants his work to help other people learn. In 2014, he decided to donate his archives to a museum in Canada. This museum is the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal. He wants his drawings to be easy for others to see. This helps keep his ideas alive for future architects.
