Oscar Niemeyer was a revolutionary Brazilian architect.

He became a central figure in the development of modern architecture. Most architects of his era focused on rigid, straight lines. Niemeyer rejected these inflexible shapes. He preferred free-flowing, sensual curves. He found these shapes in the mountains and rivers of Brazil. He also saw them in the waves of the ocean. He believed the entire universe was curved. This philosophy allowed him to treat buildings like massive sculptures.

Niemeyer mastered the use of reinforced concrete to achieve his vision. Reinforced concrete is a strong material made of concrete and steel. This material allows for incredible plasticity, or the ability to be molded. He used this to create thin shells and sweeping arches. For example, he used parabolic arches to build very thin concrete structures.

In the Pampulha architectural complex, he used concrete to create curved volumes. He moved away from the strict, rational grids used by others. He also designed floating, catwalk-like ramps. These ramps created a promenade architecturale, which is a planned walking path. This path allowed people to experience unfolding vistas and beautiful views.

His work can be divided into several influential stages and styles. Early in his career, he worked within the Neocolonial movement. Later, he helped develop Brazilian modernism. This style blended modern principles with local Brazilian traditions.

One major project was the Ministry of Education and Health in Rio de Janeiro. This building used azulejos, which are traditional Portuguese tiles. It also featured tropical gardens and adjustable brises-soleil. These were shading devices used to manage sunlight. Another stage was his work on the Pampulha project.

Niemeyer's career began in Rio de Janeiro. He was born on December 15, 1907. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts. He graduated with a degree in architecture in 1934. After graduating, he worked as a draftsman. A draftsman creates the technical drawings used for construction. He worked with the influential architect Lúcio Costa. They collaborated on the Ministry of Education and Health project.

During the 1930s, Niemeyer also interned with the famous Swiss architect Le Corbusier. This contact helped shape his professional maturation.

His most significant period arrived in the 1950s and 1960s. President Juscelino Kubitschek invited Niemeyer to design Brasília. This was a planned city that became Brazil's capital in 1960.

Niemeyer designed the National Congress, the Cathedral of Brasília, and the Palácio da Alvorada. His work in Brasília was experimental and unified by common design elements. He also collaborated on the United Nations Headquarters in New York. His global reputation led to teaching invitations at Yale and Harvard. In 1988, he received the Pritzker Architecture Prize. This is the highest honor in the field of architecture.

Niemeyer's career spanned many decades and various political shifts. He was a member of the Brazilian Communist Party. Following the 1964 military coup, he left Brazil for a time. He opened an office in Paris and lived in Cuba and the Soviet Union. He returned to Brazil in 1985. He continued to design major works late in life.

He designed the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum in 1996. He also designed the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in 2002. Over his 78-year career, he completed approximately 600 projects.

Niemeyer's influence connects architecture to the natural world and mathematics. He viewed his curved designs as a reflection of Einstein's curved universe. His work bridges the gap between functional engineering and fine art. He proved that reinforced concrete could be both structural and beautiful. His legacy remains visible in the skylines of Brazil and around the world. He died in Rio de Janeiro on December 5, 2012, at age 104.
