Robert Gallo is an American scientist. He studies how germs affect the body. His sister died from a sickness called leukemia. This made him want to help people through science.

Robert found a way to grow T cells in a lab. T cells are parts of the body that fight germs. He found a substance called IL-2. This substance helps these cells grow. This work helped scientists study many different viruses.

Robert is famous for his work on HIV. HIV is the germ that causes AIDS. He helped show that this virus causes the sickness. He also helped develop a test for blood. This test can find the virus in a person.

There was a big debate about who found the virus first. A team in France also worked on this. They found a sample of the virus early on. Later, it was found that a sample from France had moved to Robert's lab. This caused a mix-up. In the end, the two teams worked together.

Robert still works to find new cures. He helps many people get medicine. He also works on a way to make a vaccine. A vaccine is a way to stop a sickness before it starts.
