In 1968, Robert became very ill. He was 15 years old. Doctors found he had a hard time breathing. His body could not fight germs well. This happened because his immune system was not working. An autopsy, which is a study of a body after death, showed he had a rare cancer. This cancer is called Kaposi's sarcoma. It is a disease that usually affects older men. It was very strange to see it in a young Black teenager.

Many years later, scientists studied his old tissue samples. They used a test called a Western blot. This test looks for tiny signs of a virus. The test found antibodies in his blood. Antibodies are parts of the body that fight germs. Some scientists think Robert had HIV. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. If this is true, it means the virus was in North America much earlier than we thought. This helps us understand how the virus spread. Sadly, the last of his samples were lost in Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
