In the 1980s, people thought he started a sickness called AIDS. They called him "Patient Zero." This name made people think he was the source of the virus. A book from 1987 helped make this idea famous. The book said he was responsible for spreading the virus to many people.

But new science shows this was not true.

Researchers used genetic analysis to study old blood samples. Genetic analysis is a way to look at the tiny parts of a virus. This study showed that the virus was already in the United States. Many men already had the virus before Gaëtan Dugas got sick. He was not the start of the outbreak. He was just one person in the middle of a larger group.

One reason for the mistake was a simple name. A study once called him "Patient O." The "O" stood for "Out-of-California." People later thought the "O" meant the number zero. Gaëtan was also very helpful to doctors. He gave them many names and addresses to help their study. This helped doctors find him, but it did not mean he started the sickness.
