Luc Montagnier was a famous scientist from France. He studied viruses. A virus is a tiny germ that can make people sick.

In 1983, Luc and his team found a new virus. This virus causes a disease called AIDS. They first called the virus LAV. Later, people gave it a new name. We call it HIV.

For a long time, there was a big fight. Scientists in France and the USA both wanted credit. They argued about who found the virus first. In 1987, the two countries agreed to share the credit. They decided to call the virus HIV.

In 2008, Luc won the Nobel Prize. This is a very big award for science. He shared it with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi. They won for finding the HIV virus.

Later in life, Luc shared some ideas that other scientists did not like. He made claims about how germs work. Many other experts said his new ideas were not correct. Luc worked in many places, including China. He died in 2022 at age 89.
