Luc Montagnier was a famous French virologist. A virologist is a scientist who studies viruses. Viruses are tiny germs that can make people sick.

He spent much of his life working as a researcher. He worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He also taught as a professor in China. His work helped the world understand how certain diseases work. This discovery was very important for medicine.

In 1983, Montagnier and his team made a huge discovery. A doctor named Willy Rozenbaum asked for help. He wanted to find the cause of a new disease called AIDS. Montagnier and his team looked at samples from patients. They found a virus in a lymph node biopsy.

They first named this virus LAV. This name stood for lymphadenopathy-associated virus. They shared their findings in a journal called Science in May 1983.

There was a long dispute about this discovery. A scientist in the USA named Robert Gallo also found the virus. Gallo called his version HTLV-III. For many years, people argued about who found it first.

In 1993, a scientist named Sheng-Yung Chang studied the samples. He found that the American sample actually came from the French lab. It happened because a sample had contaminated another one. Eventually, both sides agreed to share the credit. In 1986, they used the name HIV for the virus.

Montagnier won many great honors during his life. In 2008, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

He shared this prize with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi. They won for discovering HIV. He also received the Légion d'honneur in France. He won over 20 major awards for his work. These awards showed how much people respected his science. He even worked to help people through many different foundations.

Later in his life, Montagnier shared some very unusual ideas. He studied how DNA might send out radio waves.

Many other scientists did not agree with him. They said his ideas were not supported by facts. Some people thought his ideas were like homeopathy. Homeopathy is a way of using very diluted substances for health. Many experts rejected his claims. Montagnier died in February 2022 at the age of 89. He remained interested in science until the end.
