In 1976, Piot helped discover the Ebola virus. He worked with a team at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. They looked at blood from a sick nun in Zaire. The team traveled to many villages to stop the sickness. They shared information and used quarantine to keep people safe. Quarantine means keeping sick people away from others so germs do not spread. This helped stop the outbreak after it had killed almost 300 people.
