Gertrude Elion was a famous scientist. She studied how to make new drugs.

Most scientists used trial and error to find medicine. This means they tried many things to see what worked. Gertrude used a new way called rational drug design. This means she studied how bad cells work. She looked for ways to trick them. She wanted to kill bad cells without hurting healthy ones.

Her work led to many important medicines. She helped make acyclovir. This is a drug used for herpes. She also helped make azathioprine. This drug helps people who get organ transplants. This helps the body not fight the new organ. She even helped make AZT. This was a main drug used to treat AIDS.

Gertrude faced many hard times. She could not find research jobs because she was a woman. She worked many other jobs to pay for school. She never earned a Ph.D. through a school program. However, she won the Nobel Prize in 1988. This is a very big prize for science. She was the fifth woman to win it in medicine. She also became a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
