He is a retired Navy officer and a professor. Ballard studies the ocean floor and old shipwrecks. He is famous for finding the RMS Titanic in 1985. He also found the Bismarck, a large war ship.

Ballard uses special tools to see in the dark. He uses robots that can go very deep. These robots have lights and cameras. They can even have arms to move things. In 1985, he used a robot named Argo to find the Titanic. He looked for a trail of broken parts on the sea floor. This trail led him to the ship.

He also found hydrothermal vents. These are hot spots on the ocean floor. They let out plumes of hot water. These vents support life that does not need the sun. This is a very special way to live. Ballard also found the wreck of the USS Thresher. He found it while working for the Navy. He helped find lost submarines to keep the ocean safe.
