In 1961, Arkhipov was on a submarine called K-19. The boat had a bad leak in its power system. The crew worked hard to fix it. But the men were exposed to radiation. This was very dangerous for their health. Some crew members died from this later.

In 1962, Arkhipov was on a different boat named B-59. This boat was near Cuba. The U.S. Navy was trying to find it. They dropped small charges in the water. The crew on the B-59 did not know if a war had started. The captain wanted to use a nuclear torpedo. On this boat, three leaders had to agree to launch. The captain and one other officer said yes. Arkhipov said no. He talked to the captain and told him to surface instead. This choice stopped a nuclear war. One expert said Arkhipov saved the world. In 2017, his family received an award for his brave choice.
