Stanislav Petrov was a Soviet officer. He worked at a command center. He watched machines that looked for missiles.

On September 26, 1983, a loud alarm went off. The system said missiles were coming from the United States. It said five missiles were on their way. Petrov did not think this was true. He thought the machines made a mistake. He decided not to follow the usual rules. He waited for more news instead.

Later, people found out he was right. The sun hit clouds in a strange way. This tricked the satellite system. No missiles were actually coming. If Petrov had reported the alarm, it could have started a big war. Because he stayed calm, he helped keep the world safe.

Petrov was not always treated like a hero. His bosses were embarrassed by the mistake. He moved to a different job later. Many years later, people learned the truth. He won many awards for his wise choice. He died in 2017 at age 77.
