Robert Ballard is a famous explorer of the deep ocean.

He is a retired Navy officer and a professor of oceanography. Ballard studies marine geology and underwater archaeology. This means he looks for shipwrecks and studies the ocean floor. He is best known for finding the RMS Titanic in 1985. He also found the battleship Bismarck in 1989. These discoveries made him a very well-known person.

Ballard uses special tools to find things in the dark sea. He uses unmanned submersibles, which are robots that can be controlled from a ship. These robots have lights, cameras, and arms to move things. To find the Titanic, he used a robot named Argo. He did not look for the whole ship at first. Instead, he looked for a trail of debris. Debris is the broken pieces left behind when a ship breaks apart. This trail led him straight to the wreck.

Ballard's interest in the sea began when he was a young boy. He grew up in Kansas and later moved to California. He says watching a famous movie about the sea inspired him. He studied chemistry and geology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Later, he earned a PhD from the University of Rhode Island. He also served in the Navy as an oceanographer. This training helped him explore the deepest parts of the world.

Many important discoveries happened during his many expeditions. In 1985, his team found the Titanic two miles below the surface. In 1989, he found the Bismarck at 15,000 feet deep. This was even deeper than the Titanic. He also found hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. These vents are undersea volcanoes that release hot water. These vents support life that does not need the sun to survive. This was a huge discovery for science.

His work connects science to the history of our world. By finding shipwrecks, he helps us learn about the past. By finding vents, he helps us learn how life works. He even started the JASON Project to help others explore. He still leads ocean exploration on a ship called the Nautilus. Ballard shows us that the ocean still holds many secrets. There is always something new to discover under the waves.
