He was born in Flirey, France, around 1918. An American soldier named Lee Duncan found him in a damaged kennel during World War I. Duncan rescued a litter of five puppies from the battlefield. He kept one male puppy and named him Rin Tin Tin. He also kept a female puppy named Nanette. These names came from lucky charms that French children gave to soldiers.

Becoming a star took a lot of hard work and training. Duncan brought the dogs back to the United States in 1919. He lived in Los Angeles and taught Rin Tin Tin many tricks. Once, a heavy bundle of newspapers fell on the dog and broke his leg. Duncan spent nine months nursing him back to health. After he healed, Rin Tin Tin showed off his amazing ability to leap great heights. A man named Charley Jones filmed the dog using a new slow-motion camera. This video helped Duncan realize the dog could be a film actor.

His movie career changed the history of Hollywood. His first big starring role was in the 1923 film Where the North Begins.

This movie was so successful it helped save Warner Bros. studios from losing all their money. People even called Rin Tin Tin "the mortgage lifter" because his films paid the studio's debts. He appeared in 27 Hollywood films during his career. His success helped a man named Darryl F. Zanuck move from writing stories to becoming a powerful studio executive. Rin Tin Tin was even so popular that the Mayor of New York City gave him a key to the city.

People all over the world loved watching him on screen. Because he was in silent films, people in different countries could understand him easily. In Berlin, fans called him a "human dog" because he was so talented. There is even a famous story that he was voted Best Actor at the first Academy Awards in 1929. Some people believe the judges removed him because they wanted a human to win. However, other experts say this might just be an urban legend.
