He had a career that lasted for 70 years. He performed for three different generations of Americans. Skelton worked on radio, television, and in many films. He even had stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He wanted to be known as a clown. To him, a clown was someone who could do everything.

His journey to stardom began when he was a very young boy. His family was quite poor in Vincennes, Indiana. He started working as early as age seven to help his mother. He sold newspapers and did many odd jobs. Later, he joined a traveling medicine show. One day, he accidentally fell off a stage and broke many bottles. The audience laughed at the accident. Skelton realized then that he could earn a living by being funny.

Red and his wife, Edna, worked together to build his success. They traveled across the country to find work in theaters. They even sold small cubes of soap to pay for hotel rooms. In 1934, they performed in Montreal, Canada. While eating in a diner, they watched people eat doughnuts. They turned this into a funny skit called "Doughnut Dunkers." This routine helped him become a big star in vaudeville and radio.

Skelton became a household name through many different shows. He appeared in 19 films, such as "Ship Ahoy" in 1941. He also hosted "The Red Skelton Show" on television. This show started on NBC in 1951. Later, it moved to CBS and became "The Red Skelton Hour" in 1962. He even performed for President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House.

Besides acting, Skelton was also a very talented artist. He spent much of his time painting pictures of clowns. His wife, Georgia, helped him show his art at a hotel in Las Vegas. He sold many original paintings and prints. He earned a lot of money from his art sales. Some people believed he earned more from painting than from his TV shows. Today, his artwork is kept in a museum in Indiana.
