He was a major star for over forty years. He is best remembered for his television programme, The Benny Hill Show. This show was a comedy-variety show that used many different styles. It included slapstick, which is silly physical comedy. It also used parody and innuendo. The British Film Institute called him a major star. They also said he was the first British comedian to become famous through television.

His show had a very special way of working. It combined live comedy on a stage with filmed sketches. Hill appeared in almost every part of the show. He played many different characters, like Fred Scuttle. One of the most famous parts was the closing chase. This was a "run-off" where characters chased Hill. They often chased him through the screen in funny ways. The show used a trick called "under-cranking" to make the movement look fast.
