Berle’s way of performing was very visual and high in energy. He used a style called slapstick, which involves physical comedy and funny movements. He often wore outlandish, silly costumes to entertain his audiences. His mother, Sarah, would often sit in the crowd to help. She had a very loud, piercing laugh that encouraged others to laugh too. When she laughed, Berle would often make up funny jokes to say to her. This helped make his shows feel lively and fun for everyone watching.

His journey into show business began when he was only five years old. He won a contest by imitating the famous actor Charlie Chaplin. As a young boy, he worked as a model for Buster Brown shoes. He also appeared in many silent films during the 1910s and 1920s. He even traveled to Hollywood to work with famous stars like Mary Pickford. By the age of twelve, he was performing in musical comedies in New Jersey. By sixteen, he was already a master of ceremonies in vaudeville shows.

In the late 1940s, Berle became the first major star of television. He hosted a popular show called the Texaco Star Theatre on NBC.

His show was so popular that it reached a 97% share of the viewing audience. Many people would even close their businesses or restaurants just to watch him. In Detroit, water levels in reservoirs dropped because everyone waited until the show ended to use the bathroom. Because of his fame, people gave him nicknames like "Mr. Television" and "Uncle Miltie." He even won Emmy Awards for his work on the program.

Berle was a leader who used his fame to do what was right. In 1950, he stood up to his show's sponsor to help Black performers. He refused to appear on the show unless the Four Step Brothers were allowed to perform. This helped break unfair rules about who could be on television. His massive impact on the industry earned him two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
