This group of islands is part of the Riau Islands Province. In the local language, people call the islands and the province "Kepulauan Riau." Sometimes, people use the name "BBK" to talk about Batam, Bintan, and Karimun. These islands are important parts of the sea near Sumatra.

Many different islands make up this large group. Some of the main islands are Batam and Bintan. You will also find Rempang, Galang, Combol, Kundur, and Karimun.

The capital city is Tanjung Pinang. It is located in the southern part of Bintan Island. Another busy place is Tanjung Balai Karimun, which is an international port. To get around, people use high-speed ferry services. These fast boats travel to the Lingga Islands in the south.

This area has a very long and busy history. From 650 CE to 1377 CE, the Srivijaya empire controlled much of this land. Later, the Jambi Kingdom grew and helped spread the Malay language. Around 1299, the Kingdom of Singapura began nearby. In the 1400s, the Malacca Sultanate held control of the area. After they were conquered in 1511, the Johor Sultanate took over. In 1812, a new group called the Riau-Lingga Sultanate was created.

Big changes happened because of rules made by other countries. In 1824, the Anglo-Dutch Treaty was signed. This treaty set a border between British and Dutch interests. Because of this, the islands went to the Dutch side. This meant they were no longer managed along with Singapore. In 1989, a group called the Sijori Growth Triangle was formed. This helped areas like Batam grow and develop. In 2002, the Riau Islands became their own province.

Today, the islands are a place of much activity and change. The area became a free-trade zone in 2009 to help business. However, there are also some hard things happening there. Many people move to the islands from other parts of Indonesia. This has changed the population, and the Malay people now make up about one third of the people. This change has caused some social tension and violence. There is also the problem of piracy at sea.
