It sits south of Singapore and near the Riau Province. The islands are located off the eastern coast of Sumatra. The equator line actually passes through the northern tip of Lingga Island. This island is the main one in the whole group. The archipelago is made of about 600 different islands. It covers a total land area of 2,250.45 square kilometers. This place is part of the Riau Islands Province.

Life in the islands is tied to the sea. Most people there work in the fishing industry. Many people live in the regency, with 102,474 people living there in mid-2023. The people are mainly Malay, Bugis, and Chinese. Most of the residents follow the religion of Islam. You can find beautiful beaches and coral reefs here. However, not many tourists visit the islands. This is because the local transport is not very frequent. It can be hard to travel between the islands and the outside world.

History and names are very important in Lingga. The name Lingga comes from a mountain profile. The mountain looks like a shape called a Hindu lingam. This mountain has three sharp teeth at its peak. One peak looks like it broke off at the base. Malay poets have written poems about this mountain. They use it as a symbol of being durable. You can also see the old Benteng Bukit Cening fort. It sits high up and looks over the sea. The cannons are still lined up there today.

There are many different islands and districts to know. The largest and most important islands are Lingga and Singkep. Other major islands include Sebangka and Bakung. Singkep is surrounded by islands like Pulau Posek and Pulau Serak. The regency is divided into thirteen different districts. These include Singkep, Lingga, and Senayang. Some districts were created more recently, like Katang Bidare in 2019. The main town and seat of the regency is Daik. It is located on Lingga Island.

Traveling to these islands requires a few steps. Most people arrive from Tanjung Pinang on Bintan island. You can take a high-speed ferry to reach Singkep. From there, you might need to charter a local boat. If you want to reach Lingga, you can go to Daik. It takes about one day to get there from Singapore. During World War II, a place called Lingga Roads was very busy. The Imperial Japanese Navy used it to park their ships. They wanted to stay close to a source of fuel.
