Many islands make up this place. Some big islands are Batam and Bintan. Other islands are Rempang, Galang, Combol, Kundur, and Karimun. Tanjung Pinang is the capital city. It sits in the south of Bintan. Another big port is Tanjung Balai Karimun.

This area has a long history. Long ago, the Srivijaya empire ruled here. Later, the Malacca Sultanate held the islands. In 1824, a treaty changed things. The islands became part of the Dutch area. This meant they were no longer joined with Singapore.

Today, the islands are a busy place. Some areas are free-trade zones. This means trade happens easily there. People use fast ferries to travel. These boats go to the Lingga Islands. Many people move to the islands from other parts of Indonesia. This change has caused some social tension. There is also some trouble with piracy at sea.
