Long ago, a group of animals appeared. They lived 56 million years ago. Scientists call this group rhinocerotoids. They belong to a large group of animals called perissodactyls.

Many families of rhinocerotoids are now gone. They are called extinct. These include the Amynodontidae and the Hyracodontidae. The Eggysodontidae are also gone. One group was very special. It was the Paraceratheriidae. These were the largest land mammals ever. They were bigger than any land animal we know today.

Only one family lives today. These are the Rhinocerotidae. People call them true rhinoceroses. There are five living species in this family.

Sometimes, people call all these animals rhinoceroses. This can be confusing. It is better to use the name rhinocerotoids. This name covers all the groups in this big family. Some people think of the extinct ones as rhinos too. But rhinocerotoids is a clearer name for the whole group.
