Rhinocerotoids are a large group of animals. They belong to a group called perissodactyls. These animals first appeared 56 million years ago. This time was during the Paleocene period. Scientists use the name rhinocerotoids to describe them. This name helps avoid confusion. It covers many different types of animals.

This group has many different families. Some families lived a long time ago. They are now extinct, which means they are gone. These extinct groups include the Amynodontidae. They also include the Hyracodontidae. The Eggysodontidae are another group that is gone. One group was very special. The Paraceratheriidae were part of this group. They were the largest land mammals to ever live.

Scientists study how these animals are related. They use a tool called a cladogram. This is a diagram that shows family links. A study by Bai and others happened in 2020. This study used a phylogenetic analysis. That is a way to find out how living things are related. It helps us see the history of the rhinocerotoids.

Only one family from this group lives today. These are the Rhinocerotidae. People often call them true rhinoceroses. There are five living species in this family. Some people call all rhinocerotoids rhinoceroses. This can be a bit confusing for people. Using the word rhinocerotoids is much clearer. It tells us we are talking about the whole group.

Learning about rhinocerotoids helps us understand history. It shows how animals change over millions of years. We can see how some groups grow very large. We can see how others disappear completely. The Paraceratheriidae remind us of huge land animals. The true rhinoceroses show us what remains today. It is a long story of life on Earth.
