Rheumatic fever is a serious illness that affects many parts of the body. It can cause swelling in the heart, joints, skin, and even the brain.

This sickness usually starts two to four weeks after a person has a throat infection. The infection is caused by a germ called Streptococcus pyogenes. If this throat infection is not treated, up to three percent of people might develop rheumatic fever. This disease is most common in children between the ages of 5 and 14.

How does this happen inside the body? It all starts with a confusing mistake by the immune system. When the throat germs enter, the body makes antibodies to fight them. These antibodies are like tiny soldiers meant to destroy the bacteria. However, some of these parts of the bacteria look very similar to the body's own tissues. This is called molecular mimicry. Because they look the same, the antibodies accidentally attack the person's own heart and joints. This mistake causes inflammation, which is a way the body reacts to damage.

Doctors have studied this condition for a very long time. Descriptions of these symptoms go back to at least the 5th century BCE. They were written down by a famous person named Hippocrates. The name "rheumatic" comes from the fact that the symptoms look like other rheumatic disorders. In 1944, a doctor named T. Duckett Jones created a way to help diagnose the fever. He published the Jones criteria to help doctors identify the disease.

There are many important facts and numbers regarding this disease. About 325,000 children get rheumatic fever every single year. Currently, about 33.4 million people live with rheumatic heart disease. This happens when the heart valves are damaged by repeated attacks. In 2015, the disease caused 319,400 deaths worldwide. This was a decrease from 374,000 deaths in 1990. The disease is most common in the developing world.

We can prevent this sickness by using medicine we already know. Doctors use antibiotics like penicillin to treat the initial throat infection. This helps stop the fever from ever starting. Testing people for the germ also helps prevent the misuse of medicine. If the heart valves are already damaged, doctors may use surgery to repair or replace them. People can also return to their normal activities slowly after an attack. Improved sanitation also helps keep people safe from the germs.
