Meningitis is a serious condition involving inflammation of the meninges. The meninges are the protective membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord.

Because these layers are so close to the brain, the swelling can be very dangerous. Doctors call this a medical emergency. This illness can be caused by many different things. Most cases come from infections like viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites.

Other causes include cancer, certain drugs, or bleeding in the brain.

Symptoms of meningitis can look different depending on a person's age. In adults, a severe headache is very common. It happens in almost 90% of bacterial meningitis cases.

Many adults also experience neck stiffness. This means they cannot easily move their neck forward. Other signs include fever, vomiting, and feeling confused. Some people may also find bright lights or loud noises hard to bear. Young children often show different signs. They might just be irritable, sleepy, or eat poorly. In babies, the soft spot on the head might bulge.

Doctors use special ways to find out if someone has meningitis. One way is a lumbar puncture. This is when a doctor uses a needle to collect cerebrospinal fluid from the spinal canal.

They look at this fluid to see if germs are present. Doctors also check for specific physical signs. They might look for a rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass. This is called a non-blanching rash. They may also check how a person's body reacts to certain movements. These tests help them decide how to treat the patient quickly.

There is important history and data regarding this illness. In 2019, about 7.7 million people were diagnosed with meningitis worldwide. Of those people, 236,000 died. This number is lower than in 1990, when 433,000 people died.

In some parts of the world, outbreaks happen every year. These occur between December and June in the sub-Saharan Africa meningitis belt. However, smaller outbreaks can happen in many other areas too. With the right treatment, the risk of death from bacterial meningitis is less than 15%.

We can prevent many types of meningitis through immunization. Vaccines can protect against germs like meningococcus, mumps, pneumococcal, and Hib.

Neisseria meningitidis

These shots help the body fight off the infection before it starts. If someone is exposed to certain types of meningitis, doctors might give them antibiotics to prevent the spread. This is similar to how a shield protects you from a splash. Treating the illness quickly is the best way to avoid long-term problems. Without fast care, people might face deafness, seizures, or trouble with thinking and learning.
