life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Encephalitis is a serious condition where the brain becomes inflamed. Inflammation means the brain gets sore and swollen. This can cause many different symptoms. Some people feel very confused or sleepy. Others might have a bad headache or a fever. A stiff neck is also a common sign.

It can even cause trouble with speaking or memory. Some people might have seizures or hallucinations. Because it affects the brain, it is a very important health issue.

Many different things can cause this inflammation. Viruses are a very common cause of the sickness. The herpes simplex virus is one well-known example. Other viruses include rabies, poliovirus, and the measles virus.

Bacteria and fungi can also cause it. Sometimes, tiny parasites or even amoebas cause the problem. In fact, the cause stays unknown in 30% to 40% of cases. Some people get it because of autoimmune diseases. This is when the body's own defenses cause the swelling.

Doctors have many ways to find out if someone has encephalitis. They often look for changes in how a person acts. These changes must last for at least twenty-four hours. Doctors use an MRI to take pictures of the brain. This scan helps them see the inflammation clearly.

They might also perform a lumbar puncture, which is a spinal tap. This test checks the fluid around the spine. They can also use blood tests or check a person's urine. An EEG can monitor brain activity to find abnormal signals.

There is a long history of studying this condition. The word comes from Ancient Greek words for "brain" and "head." It has been used in medical books since the early 1800s. Between 1917 and 1928, a huge event happened called an epidemic. This was a time when encephalitis lethargica spread across the whole world. We still learn from these past events today.

Scientists study these patterns to help people stay safe.

Learning about encephalitis helps us understand how to stay healthy. We can use vaccines to prevent certain types of the sickness. For example, vaccines exist for Japanese encephalitis. Most treatment happens in a hospital to keep the patient safe. Doctors may use antiviral medicines or help a person breathe.
