A sore throat can lead to a big sickness. This is called rheumatic fever. It usually starts two to four weeks after a throat infection. This infection comes from a germ called Streptococcus pyogenes.

Sometimes, the body gets confused. The immune system is our body's way of fighting germs. In this case, it makes antibodies to fight the throat germs. But these antibodies also attack the body's own parts. This is called an autoimmune reaction. This can hurt the heart, skin, and brain.

About half of people with this fever have heart issues. The germs can damage the heart valves. These are the parts that help blood flow. This damage is called rheumatic heart disease.

Doctors can use antibiotics to treat the throat germs. This helps stop the fever from starting. If the heart is already hurt, doctors might use surgery.
