Some diseases affect the heart muscle. Others affect the parts that control blood flow. For example, a stroke happens in the brain. This happens because of problems with blood vessels.

Many things can lead to these sicknesses. Eating too much salt or fat is a risk. Not moving your body enough is also a risk. Smoking can cause harm to your heart too. High blood pressure is another big risk. We call high blood pressure hypertension.

Age is a very important factor. As people get older, the risk grows. Most people get these sicknesses when they are older. In the United States, 85% of people over 80 have them.

Many of these sicknesses can be stopped. You can eat healthy foods. You can also exercise to stay strong. Doctors can use medicine to help. Even treating a sore throat can help your heart later.
