Lupus is a serious health condition called systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE. It is an autoimmune disease, which means the body's immune system makes a mistake. Instead of fighting germs, the immune system attacks the person's own healthy tissues. This can happen in many different parts of the body at once. Because it affects so many areas, doctors sometimes call it "the great imitator." This is because its signs can look like many other illnesses.

How the disease works involves a specific way the body reacts. The immune system creates things called autoantibodies. These are special proteins that mistakenly target a person's own cells. One common type is called anti-nuclear antibodies. When these antibodies attack, they cause inflammation, which is swelling and redness. This process can affect the skin, joints, and even internal organs.

The name lupus comes from a very old history. In the 13th century, people used the Latin word for "wolf." They chose this name because the red rashes caused by the disease looked like a wolf's bite. Today, we know much more about the science, but the old name remains. Scientists still study why the disease happens. They think it is a mix of a person's genes and things in their environment.

There are many important facts about who gets lupus. It is much more common in women than in men. In fact, women of childbearing age are affected nine times more often. Most people start showing symptoms between the ages of 15 and 45. People of African, Caribbean, and Chinese descent have a higher risk. In some places, the rate is 20 to 70 cases for every 100,000 people.

Lupus can feel very different from other common health issues. For example, many people feel joint pain, but lupus arthritis is usually less disabling than rheumatoid arthritis. Some people get a butterfly rash on their face. This red patch affects 30% to 60% of people with SLE. The disease can go through flares, which are periods of illness. It can also enter remission, which is a time when symptoms are few or gone.
