It is not contagious, so you cannot catch it from someone else. The condition can look different for everyone. Some people have small patches of skin. Others have skin changes that cover their whole body.

This can cause redness, itching, or dryness. It can also make the skin look scaly or purple.

There are five main types of psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis is the most common type. It makes up about 90% of all cases.

Pustular psoriasis creates small, noninfectious, pus-filled blisters. Inverse psoriasis appears as smooth, red patches in skin folds.

Finally, erythrodermic psoriasis is a widespread type that affects most of the body. It can develop from any of the other types.

Scientists believe genetics play a very large role. This means the condition can be passed down in families. Researchers have looked at how genes work together. They found nine specific areas on chromosomes linked to the disease.

These are called PSORS1 through PSORS9. The most important one is PSORS1. It is located on chromosome 6. This area helps control how the immune system works. Studies on identical twins show a strong link to genes.

Many things can trigger skin changes. Injury to the skin can cause a new patch. This is called the Koebner phenomenon.

The weather can also matter. Symptoms often get worse during the cold winter months. Stress and certain infections can also play a role. Some medications, like beta blockers, might make it worse too. Psoriasis affects about 2% to 4% of all people. Men and women are affected just as often.

While there is no cure, there are many ways to help. About 75% of people see improvement using only creams.
