life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Rheumatology is a special branch of medicine. It focuses on finding and managing many different health problems. Most of these problems involve inflammation. Inflammation is when parts of the body become red, hot, or swollen. This often happens in the bones, muscles, and joints. It can even affect internal organs. There are more than 100 different diseases in this group. These are called rheumatic diseases.

Some well-known examples are arthritis and lupus.

How do these diseases work? Many of them are caused by the immune system. The immune system is meant to protect you. However, in these diseases, it can cause problems for the body. Rheumatology is closely linked to immunology, which is the study of the immune system. Doctors look for many different types of issues. They might find degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis. They might also find inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Some diseases are caused by crystals, such as gout. Others affect the soft tissues, like tendons and ligaments.

Doctors who study this are called rheumatologists. They must go through a lot of training. In the United States, they go to school for four years. Then they attend medical school for four more years. After that, they do three years of residency. They may even do two or three more years of fellowship training. Some doctors specialize in helping children. These are called pediatric rheumatologists. There is currently a global shortage of these specialists. This means there is a high demand for their help.

To help patients, doctors use many tools. They perform physical exams to check joints and muscles. They might use the Schober's test to check the lower back. Doctors also use X-rays and ultrasounds to see inside the body. Blood tests can also provide important clues. Once they find the problem, they use different treatments. They might use medicine to stop pain or swelling. Some patients use physiotherapy to help them move. Others might use occupational therapy to find new ways to do daily tasks.

There is also a field called rheumasurgery. This is a type of surgery for rheumatic diseases. It started in the 1950s in Heinola, Finland. This work is done by rheumatologists and orthopedic surgeons working together. Some surgeries remove inflamed tissue to stop damage. Other surgeries, called corrective interventions, fix damage that has already happened. This can include replacing a joint or moving a bone. Since the early 2000s, medicine has changed a lot. New biopharmaceuticals have become a very important part of how doctors care for people.
