Renaissance technology

The Renaissance was a time of amazing new tools and ideas. It lasted from the 14th century to the 16th century. During this era, people made many inventions that changed the world. These tools helped people communicate, travel, and build much larger things. Some inventions were brand new, while others were better versions of old ideas. This period helped start the Scientific Revolution.

One of the biggest changes was how people shared information. Johannes Gutenberg, a German goldsmith, created the movable type printing press. This machine used a screw press to print pages very quickly. It could make about 3,600 impressions in a single workday. Because of this, books became much easier to make in large numbers. By the 16th century, presses worked in over 200 different cities. This helped more people learn to read and share new ideas.

Engineers also found clever ways to move and lift heavy objects. They used a crank and a connecting rod to do this. A crank turns in a circle, but the rod changes that into a back-and-forth motion. This helped power water pumps and even special paddle wheel boats. Some people even designed ways to help humans fly safely. An early parachute design featured a conical canopy and a frame. Later, Leonardo da Vinci sketched a pyramidal version with a square frame.

Many famous people helped develop these mechanical skills. Leonardo da Vinci and Taccola drew detailed sketches of machines in their books. In 1588, Agostino Ramelli showed many different ways to use cranks. Later, Georg Andreas Böckler showed even more uses for these tools. In Venice, an inventor named Fausto Veranzio improved parachute sketches with a sail-like cloth. These thinkers used their drawings to show how complex machines could work.

New technology also helped with big jobs like building and sailing. Explorers like Vasco da Gama used an astrolabe to find their way at sea. In England, Henry VII ordered a dry dock to be built at Portsmouth. Some people even used huge lifting towers to move massive stones. Domenico Fontana used one to move a 361-ton obelisk in Rome. Even floating docks were used to help save ships that ran aground. These tools made the world feel much smaller and more connected.
