He became internationally famous for his work in a very hazardous profession. His job was to extinguish and cap oil well blowouts. These blowouts are uncontrolled releases of oil or gas that can catch fire. Adair worked on these massive fires on land and on offshore platforms. He was an innovator who developed new ways to handle these dangerous energy crises. His career helped shape how the world manages industrial accidents in the petroleum industry.

Adair used scientific principles to control massive flames. Early in his career, he worked with a pioneer named Myron Kinley. Together, they used a technique involving a V-shaped charge of high explosives. This method utilized the Munroe effect to snuff out the fire with a sudden blast. The Munroe effect is a principle used in weapons like bazookas and the atom bomb. By using a controlled explosion, the crew could momentarily stop the flow of fuel. This allowed them to cap the well and prevent further burning. This scientific approach turned firefighting into a precise engineering task.

Throughout his long career, Adair participated in many different types of operations. He worked on land-based wells and offshore platforms in the ocean. He managed fires at natural gas wells and various other petroleum sites. He led specialized crews to tackle spectacular and massive fires worldwide. Some of his most famous work involved massive pillars of flame in desert environments. Other missions required working on floating structures in the middle of the sea. Each environment required different tools and different levels of technical skill.

Adair's journey began in Houston, Texas, where he was born on June 18, 1915. His father was an Irish immigrant who worked as a blacksmith. After attending Reagan High School, Adair joined the US Army during World War II. He served in a bomb disposal unit, which prepared him for dangerous work. After the war, he entered the oil industry to begin his specialized career. In 1959, he founded his own company, Red Adair Co. Inc. This company became a leader in the field of well control.

His career was marked by several massive and historic events. In 1962, he gained global attention at the Gassi Touil gas field in the Algerian Sahara. This fire was nicknamed "The Devil's Cigarette Lighter." It burned from November 13, 1961, until April 28, 1962. In 1968, he sealed a large gas leak on an Australian platform off the coast of Victoria. That same year, he stopped a six-day fire at the Aliso Canyon Oil Field in Los Angeles. In 1977, his crew helped cap the largest offshore blowout in the North Sea. This occurred at the Ekofisk Bravo platform in the Norwegian sector.

Adair's impact reached even further into the 1980s and 1990s. In 1988, he helped extinguish the Piper Alpha oil platform fire in the North Sea. At age 75, he returned to action to help stop oil well fires in Kuwait. These fires were set by retreating Iraqi troops following the Gulf War in 1991. Over his lifetime, Adair helped extinguish more than 2,000 different oil and gas fires. His expertise was needed in some of the most remote and difficult places on Earth. He retired in 1993 and sold his company to Global Industries.

Red Adair left a lasting legacy in both industry and popular culture. The 1968 film *Hellfighters* was loosely based on his 1962 Sahara mission. The TV series *MacGyver* used his life as an inspiration for its characters. In Texas, some roads near South Shore Harbour Marina are named after him.

He received the Golden Plate Award from the American Academy of Achievement in 1980. He died in Houston in 2004 at the age of 89. He is remembered as a man who mastered one of the world's most dangerous jobs.
