Don Walsh was a pioneering American oceanographer and a captain in the U.S. Navy.

He spent his life exploring the deepest parts of the Earth's oceans. His work helped scientists understand the physical world beneath the waves. He was a specialist in marine policy and ocean engineering. Walsh is best known for reaching the deepest point in the world's oceans. This achievement changed how we think about deep-sea exploration.

On January 23, 1960, Walsh completed a historic mission in the bathyscaphe Trieste. He traveled with Jacques Piccard to the Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench. The bathyscaphe is a specialized deep-diving vessel. During this dive, they reached a depth of 37,800 feet. Later, more accurate measurements placed the depth at approximately 35,800 feet. This dive was a massive technical success. It proved that humans could survive the intense pressure of the deep ocean.

Walsh's expertise came from many years of intense study and service. He was born in Berkeley, California, on November 2, 1931. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954 with a bachelor's degree in engineering. He continued his education with a Master's degree from San Diego State University. He also earned a PhD in physical oceanography from Texas A&M University. This deep knowledge of how water and pressure work was essential. His education prepared him for the challenges of the deep sea.

His career in the U.S. Navy lasted for 24 years. He served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Walsh worked as a submarine officer and a qualified Navy Diver. He spent fifteen years at sea, mostly commanding submarines. He also worked on research and development for the Navy. By the time he retired, he had attained the rank of captain.

His military background provided the discipline needed for ocean exploration.

After his Navy service, Walsh became a leader in ocean science and education. He served as the Dean of Marine Programs at the University of Southern California. There, he started the Institute for Marine and Coastal Studies. He also managed a marine consulting business starting in 1976. He conducted about five deep-sea expeditions every year. Walsh worked with the National Academy of Sciences on the Ocean Sciences Board. He even held a faculty position at Oregon State University.

Walsh received many prestigious honors for his contributions to science. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2001. In 2010, the National Geographic Society gave him the Hubbard Medal. This is their highest honor.

He also received the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award.

In 2025, the Navy announced it would name an ocean surveillance ship the USNS Don Walsh. This honors his lasting impact on maritime history.

His passion for the ocean was shared by his family. In 2019, Walsh watched Victor Vescovo complete new record-breaking dives in the Challenger Deep. In June 2020, his son Kelly Walsh joined Vescovo on a dive. Kelly became only the eleventh person to reach the bottom of the Challenger Deep. This moment connected two generations of ocean explorers. Don Walsh lived on a ranch in Oregon with his wife, Joan. He passed away on November 12, 2023, at the age of 92.
