T. Boone Pickens was a powerful American business magnate and financier. He was a major figure in the energy industry for many decades. Pickens was best known for his work with oil and gas companies. He also became a very famous figure in the world of finance. As a leader, he managed large funds and influenced how companies were run. His career spanned many different areas of the economy and politics. He left a massive impact on both business and charity.

Pickens' business methods often involved a process called a takeover. This is when one person or company buys a large part of another company. During the 1980s, he was known as a corporate raider and a takeover operator. He would make buyout bids, which are offers to purchase a company's stock. Sometimes these bids were solicited, meaning the company asked for them. Other times, they were unsolicited, meaning the company did not ask for the offer. These actions often led to mergers, where two companies join together to become one.

His career had several distinct stages of growth and change. First, he worked in the oil industry as a geologist and a wildcatter. A wildcatter is someone who searches for oil in new areas. In 1956, he founded a company that eventually became Mesa Petroleum. By 1981, Mesa was one of the largest independent oil companies in the world. Later, he moved into hedge fund management. A hedge fund is a type of investment fund that uses different strategies to make money. He chaired BP Capital Management, which used his initials, Boone Pickens.

Pickens' rise to fame happened through massive and complex deals. One of his first major successes was taking over the Hugoton Production Company. This company was 30 times larger than his own company, Mesa. He also attempted to buy out several huge corporations. These included Cities Service, Gulf Oil, Phillips Petroleum, and Unocal. In 1985, he appeared on the cover of Time magazine because of his deal with Gulf Oil. Some people called him a greenmailer because some deals did not finish, but he and the shareholders still made large profits from selling stock.

His financial success was measured in very large numbers. In 2006, Pickens earned $990 million from his equity in two funds. He also earned $120 million from the fees applied to those profits. In 2007, his earnings reached $2.7 billion. This happened because his BP Capital Equity Fund grew by 24% after fees. His Capital Commodity fund grew by 40% during that same year. These numbers showed his ability to manage huge amounts of money in the energy markets. He held large positions in stocks like ExxonMobil and Suncor Energy.

Pickens also used his influence to promote new ideas about energy. He was a strong supporter of natural gas as a fuel for vehicles. In 1997, he formed the Pickens Fuel Corporation to promote this idea. This company later became the Clean Energy Fuels Corporation. He also advocated for using horizontal drilling and fracking. These are technical methods used to unlock oil and gas from shale reserves. Beyond gas, he promoted solar energy, wind energy, and the construction of nuclear power plants. He wanted the United States to use more domestic energy sources.

Finally, Pickens was a major figure in philanthropy and politics. A philanthropist is someone who gives large amounts of money to help society. He gave away more than $1 billion to various causes during his life. This included nearly $500 million to Oklahoma State University. He also supported medical research and wildlife conservation. In politics, he was a supporter of President George W. Bush. He also made over $5 million in political donations since 1980. He even offered a million dollars in a challenge regarding political advertisements in 2007.
