He was an entrepreneur who worked in many different fields. These included medicine, pharmaceuticals, whiskey, and energy. He was also a famous philanthropist and art collector. The press often called him "Lenin's chosen capitalist." This nickname referred to his very close business ties to the Soviet Union. Hammer built a massive global network of friends and associates. He used this network for business and what he called "citizen diplomacy."

Hammer's early life was deeply connected to political activism. He was born in New York City to Jewish emigrants. His father, Julius Hammer, was a leader in the Socialist Labor Party of America.

This party eventually helped found the Communist Party USA. Julius Hammer worked to increase trade between the United States and Soviet Russia. He used his company, Allied Drug and Chemical, to move items through Riga. This was done during a time when there was an embargo against Soviet Russia. Because of these activities, the family was under federal surveillance.

His father also faced serious legal trouble in the early 1920s. A patient died following a surgical procedure at Julius Hammer's medical office. This happened during a large flu epidemic. A jury convicted Julius of first-degree manslaughter. He was sentenced to three and a half years in Sing Sing prison. There is a debate among historians about this event. Most say Julius performed the procedure. However, author Edward Jay Epstein claims Armand performed it while he was a medical student. Epstein suggests Julius took the blame to protect his son.

Armand Hammer received a medical education despite his business interests. He graduated from Columbia College in 1919. He earned his medical degree from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1921. Even though he did not have a long medical career, he liked being called "Dr. Hammer."

While his father was in prison, Armand and his brother Victor grew the family business. They resold equipment at low prices after World War I. Hammer also found success selling a ginger extract. This product contained high levels of alcohol and was popular during Prohibition. It brought in $1 million in sales in 1919.

Hammer spent much of his life as a mediator between nations. He traveled to the Soviet Union for nearly ten years, from 1921 to 1930.

He represented Allied Drug and Chemical in the new Soviet state. Hammer claimed he made a deal with Lenin to trade American wheat for Russian goods. This included furs, caviar, and jewelry. He also negotiated the import of Fordson tractors to help Soviet agriculture. Hammer managed a large business making pens and pencils. His pencils were of such high quality that his trade concession became permanent.

In 1956, Hammer took control of Occidental Petroleum. This company was failing at the time. He served as the chief executive officer and chairman for the next 33 years. Under his leadership, Occidental Petroleum grew into one of the largest companies in the United States.

He also dealt in many other goods, such as an asbestos concession in the Urals. His life involved many complex financial dealings. Some of these included money-laundering and bribery, which he recorded on tapes. These activities were exposed during the 1960s and 1970s.

Hammer's legacy is visible in many places today. His name is attached to the Armand Hammer Golf Course in Los Angeles.
