A jury convicted Julius of first-degree manslaughter. He was sentenced to three and a half years in Sing Sing prison. There is a debate among historians about this event. Most say Julius performed the procedure. However, author Edward Jay Epstein claims Armand performed it while he was a medical student. Epstein suggests Julius took the blame to protect his son.

Armand Hammer received a medical education despite his business interests. He graduated from Columbia College in 1919. He earned his medical degree from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1921. Even though he did not have a long medical career, he liked being called "Dr. Hammer."

While his father was in prison, Armand and his brother Victor grew the family business. They resold equipment at low prices after World War I. Hammer also found success selling a ginger extract. This product contained high levels of alcohol and was popular during Prohibition. It brought in $1 million in sales in 1919.

Hammer spent much of his life as a mediator between nations. He traveled to the Soviet Union for nearly ten years, from 1921 to 1930.
