He was known for his skill in a very dangerous job. He worked to stop fires from oil and gas wells. These fires could happen on land or far out at sea. He was an innovator in this specialized field. Adair helped to extinguish more than 2,000 fires during his career. This work required great bravery and new ideas.

Adair used a special way to put out huge fires. He and Myron Kinley used a V-shaped charge of explosives. This method used the Munroe effect to snuff out the flames. The blast from the explosion would stop the fire. This same effect was used in bazookas and the atom bomb. It was a way to use a sudden force to control a fire. This technique helped him tackle many spectacular fires.

Adair was born in Houston, Texas, in 1915. His father was an Irish immigrant who worked as a blacksmith. Adair went to Reagan High School before joining the US Army. During World War II, he served in a bomb disposal unit. After the war, he began his career in the oil industry. In 1959, he founded his own company called Red Adair Co. Inc. He worked hard to build his reputation globally.

Many big events happened during his long career. In 1962, he fought a fire in the Algerian Sahara. This fire was called the Devil's Cigarette Lighter. It burned from November 1961 until April 1962. In 1977, he helped cap a huge blowout in the North Sea. This happened at the Ekofisk Bravo platform in the Norwegian sector. In 1991, he even helped stop fires in Kuwait after the Gulf War.

Some roads near South Shore Harbour Marina in Texas are named after him. He received the Golden Plate Award in 1980 for his achievements. Adair retired in 1993 and died in 2004 at age 89. He remains a famous name in the history of firefighting.
