Reason

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Reason is a special way we use our minds. It is the ability to use logic to find the truth. We do this by looking at what we already know. Then, we use that information to learn new things. This process helps us understand the world around us. Many people think reason is a unique human ability. It is used in science, math, and even religion.

There are different ways that reasoning works. One way is called deductive reasoning. Another way is called inductive reasoning. There is also a type called abductive reasoning. Some people also use intuition to think. Intuition is a way of knowing things without a slow process. In math, intuition helps people come up with new ideas. These ideas can then be turned into formal proofs.

Great thinkers have studied reason for a very long time. In ancient Greece, Plato said reason should rule the mind. He thought it should lead our passions and feelings. His student, Aristotle, called humans "rational animals." Aristotle believed that living by reason leads to true happiness. Later, thinkers like Thomas Aquinas used reason to talk about human rights. He believed reason is a spark from the divine.

In the 1600s, ideas about reason began to change. René Descartes was a very important philosopher during this time. He said that humans are "thinking things." He used reason to try and find a foundation for all knowledge. He even doubted everything except his own mind. Another thinker, Thomas Hobbes, saw reason as a way to add and subtract ideas. This is sometimes called "calculative" reason.

Reason helps us make big decisions in our lives. It allows us to change our own goals and beliefs. We use it to understand cause and effect. We also use it to tell the difference between truth and falsehood. Some scientists study how our brains use reason. They even wonder if animals can reason like humans do. Reasoning is a way to move from one idea to a related one.
