Reason is a way we use our minds to find truth. We use what we know to learn new things. This helps us understand the world. People use reason in science, math, and religion.

Some thinkers have different ideas about reason. Long ago, Plato said reason should rule our minds. Aristotle called humans "rational animals." He thought living by reason led to true happiness. Later, Saint Thomas Aquinas said reason is a gift from God. He believed reason shows that all people have rights.

In the 1600s, ideas began to change. René Descartes said he was a "thinking thing." He used reason to study how we know things. Other thinkers, like David Hume, had different views. Hume thought reason mostly serves our feelings.

Reason also helps us make big choices. It helps us see cause and effect. It can help us change our own beliefs. Some scientists even study if animals can reason too. Reasoning is a way to move from one idea to the next.
