Rationality

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Rationality is the quality of using good reasons. It helps us guide our beliefs and our actions. If you have strong evidence, your belief is rational. If you have a good reason for an action, that action is rational.

There are many ways to think about this idea. Some people say being rational means responding to reasons. For example, dark clouds are a reason to take an umbrella. Others say rationality is about coherence. This means your thoughts should fit together well. You should not hold beliefs that fight each other.

Scientists and thinkers study different types of rationality. One type is theoretical. This is about how we form beliefs using evidence. Another type is practical. This is about how we make decisions and act. Sometimes these two can conflict.

Some people talk about ideal rationality. This means following all the rules of logic. Others talk about bounded rationality. This means our minds have limits. We cannot always process every single fact. Many fields study this, like psychology and economics. They want to know how we solve problems and reach goals.
