Rationality

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Rationality is the quality of being guided by good reasons. It helps us decide what to believe and how to act. If you have strong evidence for an idea, that belief is rational. If you have a good reason for a choice, your action is rational.

Some things are not part of this study at all. These are called arational things, like the weather or how your body digests food. Other things are within the realm of reason. These can be rational or irrational depending on if they meet certain standards.

There are different ways to explain how rationality works. One idea is called reason-responsiveness. This means being responsive to the reasons around you. For example, dark clouds are a reason to carry an umbrella. Another idea is coherence. This means your mental states should fit together well. You should not hold two beliefs that contradict each other. You should also intend to do things you believe are right.

Thinkers also group rationality into different types. Theoretical rationality is about your beliefs and the evidence for them. Practical rationality is about your actions, decisions, and intentions. Sometimes these two can even conflict with one another. There is also a split between ideal and bounded rationality. Ideal rationality means following every single law of logic perfectly. Bounded rationality recognizes that the human mind has limited power. We cannot always process every single piece of information.

People study these ideas in many different ways. Some thinkers are internalists and look only at the mind. Others are externalists and believe outside factors matter too. Many experts focus on the rationality of single people. Others look at social or collective rationality in groups. This looks at how groups make decisions together. Experts use different tools to study this, like decision theory. This theory says a choice is rational if it has the highest expected utility.

Many different subjects use the study of rationality. Psychology looks at how our minds use these processes. It also studies cognitive biases, which are failures of rationality. Logic studies the rules for making correct arguments. Economics and artificial intelligence also use these ideas. Even ethics asks if we can be rational without being moral. By using reason, we can solve problems more efficiently. This helps us reach our goals in a better way.
