Scientists use a tool called the rational choice model. This model helps them study how people act. It is used a lot in economics. But people also use it in sociology and politics. It can even help in crime studies.

The theory says that people have preferences. A preference is a choice between things. To work well, these choices must follow two rules. The first rule is completeness. This means you can always pick between two options. You might like one more, or you might like both the same. The second rule is transitivity. This means your choices stay in order. If you like A more than B, and B more than C, then you must like A more than C.

People look at costs and benefits to make a choice. A cost is what you must give up. A benefit is what you gain. This helps people find the best path. People do not just choose for money. They also choose to help others. They might choose based on their feelings too. By looking at these small choices, we can see how big groups act.
