People play these games in many places. You can find them in North America, Asia, Europe, Australia, and Africa. It is a great way for students to feel pride in their learning. It also helps them work together as a team.

Most games follow a specific way of working. A moderator reads questions to the players. Usually, there are two teams with four players each. Each player has an electronic buzzer to signal they want to answer. This is often called "buzzing in." The most common way to play is the tossup and bonus format. A tossup is a question that any one player can try to answer. If they get it right, their team earns points.

This success also gives the team a chance to answer a bonus question.

Bonus questions are a little different than tossups. They are usually worth 30 points in total. These often consist of three separate questions worth ten points each. Unlike tossups, team members are allowed to talk to each other during a bonus. They can confer to find the best answer together. Some special rounds might use different rules. A lightning round asks many questions very quickly. Other games might use a written worksheet round where teams work together for a few minutes.

Quiz bowl has a long and interesting history. Many modern games are modeled after old game shows. Don Reid created College Bowl as an activity for U.S. servicemen during World War II. This program later moved to the radio in 1953. It also aired on national television from 1959 to 1970. Another famous program is called It's Academic. It has been on television in the Washington, D.C. area since 1961. The Guinness Book of World Records says it is the longest-running quiz program in TV history.

Today, there are many different ways to organize these contests. One group called the Academic Competition Federation was founded in 1977. Another group, National Academic Quiz Tournaments, was started in 1996. NAQT organizes many national competitions for students of all ages. They even provide questions for teams all over the world.
