Players compete in teams. Most teams have four players. A leader reads questions out loud to the group.

Players use a buzzer to signal they want to answer. Most games use two types of questions. The first type is called a tossup. A tossup is a question for one player. They must answer it alone. If they are right, their team gets points. They also get a bonus question.

A bonus is a set of questions for the whole team. During a bonus, teammates can talk to each other. This helps them find the right answer together.

Some games have special rounds. A lightning round asks many questions very fast. Other games use a written worksheet round.
