A pub quiz is a lively game played by teams in a bar or pub.

These events are also called trivia nights or quiz nights. People love them because they bring friends together for a shared challenge. Often, a pub hosts these events on quiet nights to welcome more customers. Teams work together to solve puzzles and show off what they know. It is a social way to test your brain and have fun. Winning teams often receive prizes like cash, food vouchers, or even small toys.

Playing a quiz follows a clear set of steps. First, people form teams, usually sitting around a single table.

These teams often pick a funny name or a pun to use. A person called a quizmaster leads the event by asking questions. Some questions are read aloud, while others are written on paper. Teams write down their answers and hand them in for marking. Sometimes, teams swap papers to grade each other's work. In some games, a team can use a "joker" to double their points.

There is a long history behind these organized games. While the exact start is unknown, a quiz night was mentioned in 1946. In the late 1950s, thousands of people joined quiz leagues in places like Merseyside. In 1976, Sharon Burns and Tom Porter helped make quizzes very popular. They organized 32 teams in southern England to attract customers to pubs. Their weekly events grew from just 30 teams to 10,000 teams. This helped the pub quiz become a big part of British culture.

Quizzes use many different types of rounds to keep things interesting. A general knowledge round might cover history, science, or geography. A music round plays short clips of songs for teams to identify.

Picture rounds use photos of famous people or strange objects as clues. Some quizzes even have a "Who Am I?" round with clues that get easier. There are often between one and six rounds in a single night. This can mean answering anywhere from 10 to 80 different questions.

Today, technology has changed how people play these games. Instead of using pens and paper, some use wireless handsets. A computer can then record every answer instantly. Some companies even make special apps to stop people from cheating with phones. In the United States, professional companies host large quizzes for many teams. These commercial events can have as many as 35 teams playing at once. Whether using paper or apps, the goal remains the same: having fun together.
