It tests how much you know about many different topics. Players compete to answer questions from popular culture and general knowledge. This game is a way for friends to share what they know. It is often called a classic game. Some people even call it the godfather of trivia games. It brings people together through the joy of learning.

Playing the game is a fun challenge. You move your playing piece around a wheel-shaped board.

You roll a single die to decide how many spaces to move. The board has different colored spaces for six categories. Geography is blue, and Entertainment is pink. History is yellow, while Art & Literature is purple. Science & Nature is green, and Sports & Leisure is orange. If you answer a question correctly, you get to roll again.

To win, you must collect six plastic wedges. These small pieces look like slices of pie.

You slot them into your round playing piece to show your progress. Each wedge comes from a category headquarters space. Once you have all six, you must head to the center hub. You must land on the hub by an exact count. Then, you must answer one last question chosen by your opponents. If you miss, you must leave and try again later.

Two men created this game in Montreal, Quebec.

Chris Haney and Scott Abbott designed it on December 15, 1979. They actually designed the game in only 45 minutes! They used the back of a cigarette carton for their ideas. They spent 1980 researching all the questions. The game was first released in Canada in 1981. By 1982, they had already sold 100,000 copies in Canada. Between 1983 and 1988, they sold 30 million copies of the original version.

Today, there are over 100 different editions of the game. Some versions are made for younger players. Others focus on specific things like Star Wars or Harry Potter. You can even play an online version of the game. Trivial Pursuit has even been on television as a game show. It was so important that it joined the Games Hall of Fame in 1993. In 2025, it joined the National Toy Hall of Fame too. It remains a way to enjoy learning with others.
