It is a quiz competition that is very different from other shows. Most shows give players a question to answer. In this show, the host gives clues that look like answers. Players must name the person, place, or thing being described. They must also phrase their response as a question. This unique style makes the show very exciting to watch.

It is one of the longest-running shows in history.

Each game has three main rounds. The first two rounds are called Jeopardy! and Double Jeopardy!. In these rounds, players choose from categories on a game board. The clues have different dollar values based on how hard they are. A player can use a device to ring in when they know the answer. If they are right, they win money. If they are wrong, they lose money from their score. Some clues are hidden "Daily Doubles." These allow a player to bet their own money on one clue.

Before this round, players see the category but not the clue. They must decide how much of their money to wager. They write their bet on an electronic screen. Then, the host reads the clue. Players have 30 seconds to write their answer. They do this while special "Think!" music plays. This makes the end of the game feel very tense and fun.
