It is the capital city of the province of Quebec. The city sits on the north bank of the Saint Lawrence River. The river narrows right at this spot.

This is why the Algonquin people gave the area a special name. Their word for the place means "where the river narrows." The city has a humid continental climate. This means the summers are warm. The winters are very cold and snowy.

History began here long ago with early explorers. Jacques Cartier set up a fort called Fort Charlesbourg-Royal in 1541. However, people left that fort after less than a year. The winter was too harsh for them. Later, Samuel de Champlain founded a permanent French settlement in 1608.

He built it on the site of an old settlement called Stadacona. Champlain is often called "The Father of New France." He stayed to lead the area for the rest of his life. This city became the cradle for French speakers in North America.

Over many years, the city changed hands between different groups. In 1629, English sailors captured the city during a war. Later, the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye returned the land to France in 1632. There were many battles during the Seven Years' War. In 1759, British troops defeated the French at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham.

After that, the city was held by the British until 1763. During the American Revolution, soldiers from the south tried to take the city. Their attack failed, and the city stayed under British control. This helped shape the borders of what would become Canada.

Quebec City has many interesting facts and numbers. In 1665, there were only 550 people living in 70 houses. By 1790, it was a large town with 14,000 people.

In the 1800s, the city had a golden age of business. It used the river to ship square timber logs to Europe.

As of July 2021, the city had 549,459 people. The whole metropolitan area had 839,311 people. It is the second-largest city in its province.

Today, the city is a famous place for visitors to see. Old Quebec is a World Heritage Site because of its history.
