It sits on the north bank of the Saint Lawrence River. The city is located where the river narrows significantly.

This narrow point is caused by a promontory and Cape Diamant. The Algonquin people named the area for this feature. Their name for the place means "where the river narrows." The city has a humid continental climate. This means summers are warm and winters are cold and snowy.

Early exploration shaped the foundation of the settlement. In 1541, Jacques Cartier established Fort Charlesbourg-Royal. This was the earliest known French settlement in North America. However, the settlers abandoned the fort in less than a year. They struggled with harsh winters and resistance from indigenous inhabitants. On July 3, 1608, Samuel de Champlain founded a permanent settlement.

He built it at the site of Stadacona, an abandoned St. Lawrence Iroquoian settlement. Champlain is often called "The Father of New France." His work helped the colony become the cradle of the Francophone population. This means it was the starting point for French speakers in North America.

Control of the city shifted many times through various conflicts. In 1629, English privateers led by David Kirke captured the city. The Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye returned the land to France in 1632. During the Seven Years' War, the city saw intense fighting. British troops defeated the French at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759.

Following a siege, the British held the city until 1763. During the American Revolution, revolutionary troops attempted to seize the British garrison. Their invasion failed to take the city. This failure helped lead to a permanent split in British North America. This split created the United States and the colonies that became Canada.

As the city grew, its role in Canada changed. In 1790, Montreal became larger with 18,000 people. Quebec City had about 14,000 people at that time.

It remained an important administrative capital. Between 1841 and 1867, it served as the capital of the Province of Canada several times. In 1867, it was confirmed as the capital of the new province of Quebec. The city also saw an economic golden age during the 1800s. Its location on the Saint Lawrence River helped industries grow. The city manufactured wooden sailing ships and exported squared timber logs.

Economic shifts caused a decline in the late 19th century. New technologies changed how goods moved. Steel-hulled steamships replaced wooden ships. Railroads expanded and competed with water routes for commerce. The construction of locks on the Saint Lawrence Seaway also helped Montreal. Forest resources near the river were also depleted. These factors led to an exodus of English-speaking populations. In 1861, Anglophones made up about 40% of the population. By 1901, that number dropped to 16%. Despite these changes, the city remained a major center. It has since grown into a large metropolitan area.

Today, Quebec City is a significant cultural and historical site. The Historic District of Old Québec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 1943 and 1944, the city hosted two major wartime conferences.

Leaders like Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill met there. They used these meetings to plan D-Day landings. This shows the city's importance in global history.

Modern Quebec City is a large and diverse urban center. As of July 2021, the city had 549,459 residents. The entire Census Metropolitan Area had 839,311 people.
