Namur is a busy city located in the Wallonia region of Belgium. It serves as a very important capital for both the province and the region. The city sits in a special spot where two rivers meet. These two rivers are named the Sambre and the Meuse.

Because of these rivers, the city sits near different types of land. To the north lies the Hesbaye area. To the south-east is Condroz, and to the south-west is Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse. The city of Charleroi is located to the west of Namur.

Life in Namur moves along the water and the tracks. Many large river barges travel through the middle of the city on the Meuse. The city is also a major hub for trains. It connects big cities like Brussels, Luxembourg City, Lille, and Liège.

People in Namur work in many different ways. They make things like machines, metal goods, leather items, and porcelain. This makes the city an important center for industry and trade.

The history of Namur goes back a very long time. It started as a place for trading during Celtic times. Later, the Romans arrived after Julius Caesar defeated a local tribe. In the early Middle Ages, leaders built a strong castle on a rocky hill.

This castle overlooked the place where the two rivers meet. Over many years, different rulers controlled the city. In 1421, it became part of a larger state under Duke Philip the Good. Later, leaders from France and the Netherlands also ruled the area.

Namur has seen many big changes and difficult times. During the World Wars, the city was a target for many battles. In 1914, German forces bombarded the town. The famous citadel fell after only three days of fighting.

The city also faced heavy damage during the battles in 1940 and 1944. Despite these hard years, the city grew again. It was officially named the capital of Wallonia in 1986. Today, it is a place where the regional government and parliament meet.

There are many wonderful things to see and do in Namur. You can visit the huge Citadel, which is now open to everyone. The city also has a beautiful 18th-century cathedral. One of the most unique traditions is stilt jousting.

Since 2021, this tradition has been recognized by UNESCO. In this event, two teams wear medieval clothes and stand on tall stilts. They battle each other in a main town square every September. It is a very special way to celebrate local culture.
